Matisse at the Art Institute

French Window at Collioure, 1914

The first time I saw the exhibition (Matisse: Radical Invention 1913-1917), I walked by this painting and was confused. I stopped, looked and walked to the next room. I walked back, read the label and looked. I looked again and again. Then I went to the museum shop and bought the postcard. This painting has inspired me to do a more abstract interior. I am excited by the large blocks of color even if it's actually unfinished.

The Piano Lesson, 1916

Today I went back through the exhibition to visit the French Window at Collioure only to be stopped by this painting. The strange composition has me stumped. It's fantastic and odd. Unfortunately, there is no postcard for this work.
